Ichimoku Clouds

Ichimoku Clouds, or Ichimoku Kinko Hyo (meaning "one glance equilibrium chart" in Japanese), is a comprehensive technical analysis system developed by journalist Goichi Hosoda in the late 1960s. The indicator consists of five components plotted simultaneously on the price chart: the Tenkan-sen (conversion line), the Kijun-sen (base line), the Senkou Span A (leading span A), the Senkou Span B (leading span B), and the Chikou Span (lagging span). The area between Senkou Span A and Senkou Span B forms the "cloud" (or Kumo), which is projected 26 periods into the future and serves as a dynamic zone of support or resistance.

The cloud is the most visually distinctive element and the key to the system's interpretation. When price is above the cloud, the trend is bullish; when below, it is bearish; when inside the cloud, the market is in transition. A green cloud (where Span A is above Span B) indicates bullish conditions, while a red cloud signals bearish conditions. The thickness of the cloud represents the strength of the support or resistance zone — a thick cloud is harder to break through than a thin one. Crossovers of the Tenkan-sen and Kijun-sen provide timing signals, similar to a fast-slow moving average cross, with added confirmation from the cloud and the Chikou Span's position relative to historical price.

For algorithmic crypto traders, Ichimoku Clouds provide a remarkably self-contained trading framework because every component addresses a different dimension of market analysis: trend direction, momentum, timing, and support/resistance levels are all encoded within a single indicator. Bots can implement rules based on multiple simultaneous conditions — for example, only entering long when price is above the cloud, the cloud is green, the Tenkan-sen is above the Kijun-sen, and the Chikou Span is above price — creating a high-confidence, multi-factor entry filter that reduces false signals significantly.
