Know Sure Thing

The Know Sure Thing (KST) indicator is a momentum oscillator developed by Martin J. Pring that synthesizes rate-of-change measurements from four different time frames into a single, smoothed signal. The KST calculates the rate-of-change (ROC) for each of the four periods — typically short, intermediate, and long-term cycles — smooths each with a moving average, then combines them with progressively heavier weightings applied to the longer time frames. This weighting reflects the principle that longer-cycle momentum is more significant and slower to change, while shorter-cycle momentum is more sensitive but noisier. The result is a composite oscillator designed to capture major market cycles more reliably than any single ROC measurement.

The KST generates its primary signal through crossovers of the KST line and its signal line (a moving average of the KST itself). A bullish signal occurs when the KST crosses above its signal line, and a bearish signal when it crosses below. Zero-line crossovers are also significant: crossing above zero from below indicates a shift to positive momentum across the blended time frames, while crossing below zero is bearish. Because the KST is built on multiple cycles, it is particularly well-suited for identifying major turning points in market trends rather than short-term fluctuations.

For crypto algorithmic traders, the KST is a valuable strategic-level indicator that helps distinguish between minor price corrections and genuine trend reversals. In volatile crypto markets where short-term noise is constant, the KST's multi-period construction provides a degree of filtering that single-period oscillators cannot offer. Bot strategies can use KST signal-line crossovers as primary entry triggers for longer time frame positions, while using faster indicators for precise entry timing. This creates a layered approach where the KST handles cycle identification and shorter-term tools handle execution.
