BEP-2

BEP-2 is a token standard on Binance Chain, which is a blockchain platform created by the cryptocurrency exchange Binance. BEP-2 tokens are used to represent assets on the Binance Chain and can be used for a variety of purposes such as payments, trading, and access to decentralized applications (dApps). The standard defines the rules for issuing, transferring, and managing tokens on Binance Chain, providing a consistent framework that ensures compatibility across the ecosystem. Binance's native cryptocurrency, BNB, was originally issued as a BEP-2 token before being migrated to BNB Smart Chain.

Binance Chain was designed specifically for high-performance trading, featuring fast block times and a built-in decentralized exchange (DEX) — Binance DEX — where BEP-2 tokens can be traded directly on-chain. This design prioritized speed and throughput over programmability, meaning Binance Chain does not support the kind of complex smart contracts that Ethereum or BNB Smart Chain do. As a result, BEP-2 is a more limited standard than BEP-20, suited primarily for straightforward asset issuance and transfer rather than complex DeFi interactions.

Over time, many assets that were initially issued as BEP-2 tokens have been migrated to or replaced by their BEP-20 equivalents on BNB Smart Chain, which offers greater programmability and a richer DeFi ecosystem. Binance provides a bridge between the two chains, allowing users to swap BEP-2 tokens for their BEP-20 counterparts and vice versa. For traders using Binance's ecosystem, understanding the distinction between BEP-2 and BEP-20 is important for correctly managing withdrawals, deposits, and cross-chain transactions, as sending a token to the wrong chain's address can result in permanent loss of funds.
